Fiji Information

by Staff Writer

Fiji is made up of over 300 islands that are situated on the 180th meridian in the South Pacific. Of the all the islands, only about a third are occupied by people, while the remaining islands are designated as nature preserves and are primarily uninhabited. The islands are very specially preserved, so the evolution of the flora, fauna and wildlife can be studied by scientists all over the world.

There are two main islands in Fiji, known as Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Most of the locals live on these two islands, but only about 40 percent of the population actually lives in urban areas. Peppered on the islands are numerous small villages that are remarkably preserved and rich in ancient traditions.

Due to its isolated locale, Fiji is free of yellow fever, malaria and major diseases that are commonly found in tropical countries. It is also surprisingly free of many predators and potentially dangerous creatures, making it a very beautiful and safe place to explore. Fiji balances a belief in herbal remedies with modern medical practices and maintains a state of the art hospital network to service locals and visitors anywhere in the island chain.
