Fiji Islands Maps

by Staff Writer

Fiji is actually a group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean that make up a total landmass of 18,272 square kilometers. Approximately 330 islands combine to form the country, but the local population lives on only a third of the islands. The remaining two thirds are designated as federal nature preserves.

Two major islands are the main hubs of activity and they are known as Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Most of the locals live on these two islands, but about 60 percent live outside of major cities. The largest cities on the islands are called Nadi and Suva, though many small villages are scattered around the islands. Many of these islands are not easily accessible to visitors, but many charter companies offer boat tours and other methods of getting from place to place at a reasonable price.

Fiji’s unique landmasses and remarkably preserved environment have been studied for decades by scientists from around the globe. One of the best ways to see Fiji is “island hopping” which gives you a bird’s eye view of the island chain while enabling you to visit some of the most secluded places possible. Several companies offer flights around the islands by seaplane, and this method of sightseeing promises an experience you’ll never forget.
