Educational Travel

Many people believe that a vacation should be more than just a set period of time during which the mind vegetates into inaction. For these people, the excitement of travel is invariably caused by the chance a traveler has to learn something from an encounter with another culture that is a little, or maybe even very, different from his or her own. This type of travel is as much education as vacation.
The Fiji Islands are a perfect destination for this type of curious traveler. Whereas even the most alien cultures of Europe, South America, and Australia frequently retain many similarities to American culture, the Fijian culture is much more wholly its own. Though touched in places by foreign influences, it retains a remarkable wholeness, which provides its guests with plenty of food for thought.
The Fijian culture places a huge amount of importance on individual worth. Unlike many money-conscious western populations, the Fijians believe that a person is valuable no matter how large an annual salary they’re pulling down, how big their house is, or what type of car they drive. This kind of strident anti-materialism can be initially surprising to a visitor, but usually becomes one of the most attractive parts of his or her visit.
In keeping with this individualistic emphasis, Fijians also maintain a uniformly relaxed attitude towards work and pleasure. Their laid-back attitudes may be new to many people visiting Fiji for the first time. Such a slow and comfortable pace, however, can quickly become an addiction. Travelers who keep their eyes open almost always leave Fiji having learned something important about themselves in the bargain.
